Twitter

Twitter, created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, is a unique social media service in that it allows near real-time sharing of content. It does so by allowing Twitter users to "tweet" messages to their followers. Messages are short, text-based posts of no more than 140 characters. The service had over 300 million users in 2011 that generated over 300 million tweets and handled over 1.6 billion search queries per day. Twitter has been described as the "SMS of the Internet." It is also increasingly seen rivalring traditional news outlets, the advantage of Twitter being that news can be accessed so quickly. Topics are tagged with hash tags by users (#topic), and highly popular topics are seen on the Twitter front page as "trending." Organizations are increasingly using twitter to communicate with their customers. Twitter has also played a significant role in globalization and politics, as citizens in third world countries come online and share their viewpoints with the world.

As Twitter expands globally, it recently made the news with its announcement that it can now censor tweets by country. Twitter may have fallen in to the shadows, particularly with Facebook announcing its recent floatation in to the stock market, but Twitter has its own upward movement on its mind. As Twitter faces worldwide growth it must now begin to take a few more things in to consideration. While the social network has the ability to reach out to individuals worldwide and allow for the freedom of uncensored speech and expression, these freedoms are coming under fire as Twitter reaches in to less liberal countries.
