Frontpoint security cameras (Caption: Frontpoint Cameras Review)

Frontpoint is a top-tier home security company that we cover extensively on We Rock Your Web. They’ve typically been ahead of the curve when it comes to new technologies, and cameras are no exception. They offer two indoor cameras, an outdoor camera and a doorbell camera. Our review brings you the juicy details on each.

Frontpoint Cameras

While there are plenty of DIY cameras such as Ring out there, the beauty of the Frontpoint cameras is that they integrate into the system.

In other words, you’ll be able to view feeds and recorded footage in the Frontpoint app along with everything else. The cameras are Alarm.com licensed products.

Can My Camera Trigger The Alarm?

You’re probably wondering, can a camera event set off your alarm? No, in fact, we don’t know of any home security company where a camera triggers an alarm event. This does work in reverse, however — if one of your security sensors gets tripped, your cameras will activate, start recording and you can view the footage shortly after via app or website.

Video Doorbell Camera

Frontpoint doorbell camera: Skybell slimline edition

The first camera we’ll cover is Frontpoint’s doorbell camera. For this, Frontpoint licensed the Alarm.com Skybell Slim Line edition camera pictured at right. What we love about this doorbell camera is it essentially acts as an outside motion detector – i.e., it alerts you anytime there’s motion, no need to ring the doorbell. Here are some important features of this camera:

  • 180° field of view
  • 1080p video
  • Two-way audio
  • 3-5 year battery life
  • Motion detection up to 8 feet
  • Color night vision
  • Infrared night vision up to 8 feet (6 infrared LED lights)
  • Plastic structure is made to look like metal
  • Dimensions are 1.4″W x 4.8″H x 1.1″D
  • Hardwire setup
  • Operating temperature is -40°F to 140°F
  • WiFi (2.4 GHz up to 150 Mbps)

  • Waterproof & dust-tight

Where Should I Place My Outdoor Camera?

Think about where thieves are most likely to enter your home. Most break-ins occur at the front door, but if there are easily accessible windows or rear doors, you may want to get a second camera to cover these areas.

If you have a carport instead of garage, you can point an outdoor camera at your vehicles.

Premium Indoor Camera

Frontpoint Premium Indoor Camera

Frontpoint’s premium indoor camera is the Alarm.com ADC-V622 camera, a step up from the regular indoor camera. You can view recorded video footage in the Frontpoint cloud (no local storage available).  It features:

  • 180° field of view
  • 1080p HD video
  • Digital pan, tilt, zoom
  • Two-way audio
  • Bluetooth speakers
  • Echo-cancelling microphone
  • Infrared night vision up to 15 feet (2 infrared LED lights)
  • Dimensions: 3.125″L x 3.125″W x 5.2″H
  • WiFi (2.4 or 5 GHz)

Indoor Camera

Frontpoint Indoor Camera

The regular Frontpoint indoor camera is the Alarm.com ADC-V522IR indoor WiFi camera, and doesn’t have the bells and whistles the Premium Camera does, but costs less and can still get the job done.

  • 113° field of view
  • 1080p HD video
  • Two-way audio
  • Bluetooth speakers
  • Echo-cancelling microphone
  • Infrared night vision (2 infrared LED lights) up to 15 feet
  • Dimensions are 2.75″L x 2.06″W x 3.67″H
  • 12VDC power adapter
  • WiFi (2.4 or 5 GHz)

Privacy, Storage And Video Quality

One concern that may be crossing your mind as you read about these cameras (it did ours) is privacy.

Who Has Access To Your Cameras’ Video Feeds?

Frontpoint officially states on their website and in their video that only you have access to video feed, not their staff, nor their central monitoring station. The videos are stored in your own personal Frontpoint cloud storage portal, accessible via app or website, that only you have access to.

How Much Storage Do I Get?

According to Frontpoint, you are able to store up to 1,000 clips at a time.

My Cameras Video Quality Looks Worse Than HD

The quality of footage is reliant on the speed (bandwidth) of your internet connection. If you have a fast connection capable of streaming videos in HD, you should also be experiencing the highest quality video footage on your camera feeds.

How Do I Use A Dedicated WiFi Bandwidth To Improve Performance?

Note that some of the cameras support 5 GHz WiFi — if your router allows it, you may want to setup a separate 5 GHz network and only host your cameras on it, so they have dedicated bandwidth (and place all other devices in your home on your standard 2.4 GHz network).

Camera Installation

Here are the installation steps for the Frontpoint cameras. If you need help, just comment below.

  1. Connect AC power to your camera near a wireless router and wait one to two minutes for the status LED on the back of your camera to turn flashing white.
  2. On your smartphone, tablet or computer, connect to the network “Alarm(##:##:##)“, subbing in the #’s listed on your camera.
  3. In a web browser, navigate to http://ADCsetup
    1. Choose English
    2. Scan for WiFi Networks
    3. Select your WiFi network from the list, type in your network’s password and click Save.
    4. Wait 1-2 minutes for the Status LED on your camera light to turn solid green.
  4. Log into your MyFrontpoint.com account and click the Video tab. Note: You will need to reconnect your device to your WiFi network if it was used for the previous steps.
    1. If this is the first time you’ve added a camera to your system, follow the onscreen prompts.
    2. If you already have a camera connected to your system, click Video Device Settings > Add Video Device at the bottom of the page and follow the onscreen prompts.
