Branding your offline experience is important, so why not make branding your online experience a priority too? Facebook’s timelines and cover photos gave people (and companies) real estate to add a little more personality and individuality to the page without taking away from the the simple, clean interface and uncluttered experience of Facebook that everyone has become accustomed to. Other social media sites like Google plus, Linkedin and Twitter followed the trend and jumped on the timeline cover photo bandwagon allowing you the opportunity to add a larger photo to the top of your page in addition to the profile photo. Since social media sites are indexed in Google and other search engines like Bing and Yahoo, these pages are increasingly valuable to your brand. So it is important that you take advantage of the updating your social media pages with the right timeline cover sizes to capitalize on your already captive audience of fans and the new universe of potential customers who might find you via search.

Facebook vs. MySpace
Now, remember the old MySpace days when customization went overboard? Not only was it a design mess but it required some pretty savvy web coding experience to customize your Myspace page. Well, those days are gone thanks to sites like Facebook, that make branding your page simple. You can easily and quickly add customized banners to your social media profiles, and thus improving your fans’ online brand experience by following these easy steps (and a click of a button).
Timeline Cover Sizes
- Facebook Profile Picture Size: The photo or logo you upload must be at least 180 x 180 pixels but will display at 160 x 160 pixels (140 x 140 pixels on mobile)
- Facebook Timeline Cover Size: 851 x 315 pixels (Loads fastest as sRGB JPG file, less than 100 kilobytes)
- Facebook Custom Tab Images Size: 111 x 74 pixels
Note: In September 2015, Facebook shrunk the profile photo size down in scale but the aspect ratio changed the same so everything should be seamless from a user and page admin perspective. However your page profile photo might line up slightly differently on top of your cover photo (like it did for us) so be sure to double check how it looks on
- Twitter Profile Picture Size: up to 700K Square JPG, GIF, or PNG (animated GIFs are supported); 400×400 pixels is recommended
- Twitter Header Image Size: 1500 × 500 pixels; maximum file size of 5MB
- Twitter Background Size: PNG, GIF, or JPG format and maximum file size of 2MB.

Google Plus Image Sizes
- Google Plus Cover Photo Size: The most recent cover photo size (as of November 2013) is now smaller scale than before (see below for before and after) but still aspect ratio 6:9 so your cover photos should scale to fit. No longer do you have to click on the cover photo to see the full size. Much better if you ask us!
- As of March 2013: 2120 pixels x 1192 pixels
- Original Google Plus dimensions: 940 × 180 pixels
- Google Plus Profile Picture Size: 250 × 250 pixels (With March 2013 update, the size is the same but it crops to a circle)
- Google Plus Thumbnail Photos Size: 110 × 110 pixels

- LinkedIn Profile Cover Photo Size: 1400 x 425 pixels (under 4MB)
LinkedIn Company page
- Linkedin Featured Banner Size: Up to three 646 x 220 pixel banners (JPEG, GIF or PNG, no Flash) max size 2MB
- Linkedin Standard logo: 100 x 60 pixels
- Linkedin Thumbnail: 60 x 60 pixels
