Facebook

Launched in February of 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook was initially limited to Harvard students, and allowed for users to see and exchange personal details online. Since then, it has grown to over 800 million users in 2012. Facebook also went public (IPO) in 2012 with a market capitalization of $10 billion. Facebook allows users to friend people, share content (photos, status updates, news articles, etc.), organize events, create photo albums, and install various apps that allow for more advanced functionality, such as playing games or tracking birthdays. It is estimated that today over half the U.S. population is on Facebook.
